巴塞尔是瑞士三大城市之一，但远没有苏黎世和日内瓦出名。巴塞尔地处瑞士的西北边境，与法国和德国仅咫尺之遥。由于其特殊的地理位置，当地人基本都会讲法语和德语以及瑞士的德语，不少人还讲英语。城市人口约25万，主要工业是制药业。世界上十大生化制药公司的二个总部设立在巴塞尔，一个是罗氏 (Roche),另外一个是诺华 (Novartis)。 在巴塞尔，从事制药业的就有6万人。
5 b5 [3 m; S6 m& _2 O5 F! J4 [$ tAs one of the three biggest cities in Switzerland, Basel is not so popular as Zurich and Geneva. Basel is located on the west side of Switzerland, is adjacent to France and Germany. As the special location, the local people are able to speak France and German, some of them also could speak English. The population is around 250,000 , Pharmacy is the major industry in this city. The two famous pharmacy firms are addressed in Basel, Roche and Novartis. There are 60,000 people are working about pharmacy.

Pharmacy is the most popular business, and Architectural Design takes second place. Around 3000 people worked for architectural firms. + @. S4 b8 ?6 C6 a8 s4 a# I

小红楼的楼上一角，是上海外滩项目的团队。! _- y: r- X( T9 @/ w! L
One studio is working on Waitan SOHO project in Shanghai.1 ^5 E( Y/ T; ^3 {$ v& ?; Y
欧洲人对于可持续建筑的理解是非常身体力行的。在赫尔佐格的办公室里，哪怕是最新建造的房子里，也坚持不装空调。全部采用自然通风。9 h A" H( p% P; A. {! A1 a
The European people is insisted with Green Building idea and practiced in their office. There is no A/C, keeping nature ventilation., U3 T' k! k$ _- m4 e9 U
虽然巴塞尔没有北京热，但我在的几天，温度也达到33度， 靠的就是电风扇和耐力。# L) U! N$ k+ G. U+ O$ r$ w+ [
Perhaps Basel is cooler then Beijing during the summer, but the temperature is close to 33 degree centigrade, electric fan is the only cooling system.6 M# H7 Y0 C7 M Y" @6 m M, B" m' C$ d

现在在巴塞尔的办公室有250人左右。
- o/ z0 c( z5 {+ H! x Q/ \- LThere are around 250 people are working in Herzog and De Meuron Office. The old red building is not big enough for the new staffs. There are some new building are occupied by the architects of Herzog De Meuron.

250名员工来自34个国家，分散在7栋楼里工作，沟通会有问题。
7 v7 H9 V5 @6 b2 L$ ~9 CThe 250 staffs are from 34 countries, they were separated into seven buildings, the communication is the problem.
$ Y; C4 e% I% t& J: |0 U: G因此，在每天的10点半和下午4点，事务所有一个大家必须参加的coffee break。 通过喝咖啡，增进大家的了解。" l) Y y. F& @" t% @. ^% s
So, the coffee break is the key. Everyday, at 10 am and 4 pm, all staffs are calling to a same place for the coffee break and communication, or short meeting.
